The Art compass is divided in 2 ways: to describe the artist’s practice, platform and attitude. Thus, creating 4 subcategories.
> INSIDE-OUTSIDE, How the work relates to the art scene/institutions. This can be the artist’s topic, platform or both.
-> INSIDE - White Cube/Museum, mental spaces that relate 100% to the identities of art. The works relate to the art institutions via subject or needs and wants these traditional platforms as a space to exist.
-> OUTSIDE - NON-DEFINED, these do not relate to the ‘art scene’ nor do they need the traditional spaces to exist. You can think about ‘happenings’, sight specific, material based etc.
>CRAFTS - CONCEPTUAL; The motivation of why the artist did it the way they did.
->CONCEPT – The work is about the ‘IDEA’ or a theory, the idea will usually come first and is explored in how it will be translated from an idea to something else that can be in any form or none at all.
->CRAFT – The medium defines the work; this may not mean that the technique is the most important aspect. It is about the medium itself and the technique that guides the work and the artist’s intentions.
